OpenAI said co-founder Sam Altman is leaving as chief executive because the artificial-intelligence company’s board found he wasn’t being “consistently candid in his communications.”

“The board no longer has confidence in his ability to continue leading OpenAI,” the company said in a blog post Friday. 

Further details weren’t immediately available. 

Mira Murati, the company’s chief technology officer, will serve as interim CEO, effective immediately.

Altman co-founded OpenAI eight years ago and has been seen as a driver of the artificial-intelligence revolution. In the process, OpenAI went from a small nonprofit into a multibillion-dollar company, at near record speed, thanks in part to the launch of a for-profit arm that enabled it to raise money from backers like Microsoft.

Last year, OpenAI released ChatGPT, the chatbot with the ability to produce humanlike writing that became one of the most viral products in the history of technology.
